The 1864 three-dollar had a proof mintage of 50 pieces, higher than normal during this decade. But far fewer exist today, suggesting that quite a few were probably melted as unsold at year's end. Today no more than 20 examples are believed known with one estimate placing the number extant in the range of 13-16 pieces.   

Of the few known proof survivors of this date, quite a few are circulated, damaged, or somehow impaired.
