By the mid 1880's, the $3 gold piece was far past its prime. In fact, demand for the denomination was so low that the Philadelphia Mint struck only 1,106 $3 gold pieces in 1884. A thousand of those pieces were mint state coins meant for circulation, and the balance were proofs. For whatever reason, it seems this date was not saved in the same numbers as the 1883 or 1885 issues, making the 1884 comparatively harder to find. The proofs obviously had a much lower mintage than the mint state issue. This is likely due to much higher survival rates for the proof issue.Read More
