Introduction of Coins

The abrupt suspension of copper-nickel five-cent coinage in the spring of 1942 accounts for the relatively low mintage of this issue. Enough rolls were saved, however, that Mint State pieces are only slightly scarce in overall numbers. Typical of Denver Mint coins during this period, most 1942 D nickels were well made and show excellent luster and reasonably good strikes. A disproportionately high number of 5FS and 6FS coins has thus resulted.  The standout variety for this issue is a repunched mintmark having the first punching rotated 90 degrees clockwise to normal.Read More
