Introduction of Coins

A combination of bureaucracy and internal resistance to proof sales delaying the postwar resumption of this coinage until 1950. Henceforth, only complete sets would be offered each year, and sales were thus uniform across all denominations. The 51,386 sets sold in 1950 seemed high to collectors at the time, but this figure would become quaint within just a few years.  The first proofs made for 1950 were satiny or semi-brilliant, and collector complaints prompted more thorough polishing of the dies and planchets. The resulting coins were fully brilliant, though overly aggressive polishing of the dies left them with missing or incomplete features to the more shallow elements of the design.  Though scarce in relation to later dates, gems of the 1950 proof nickel are not rare. Even Cameo proofs are available to advanced collectors, though Ultra Cameo pieces are very elusive.  A minor doubled-die reverse variety is known for the 1950 proof nickel, but this has drawn little interest among collectors.Read More
