1950 was a recession year, and there existed little additional demand for nickels in the territory serviced by the Denver Mint. The entire production of 1950 D nickels occurred during the summer months, and by the end of the year this issue's low mintage set off a frenzy of hoarding. Thousands of rolls were preserved, making this coin the most widely hoarded issue since the 1938 D Buffalo type. Collectors will need to shop around for a desirable example from the countless Mint State pieces. Most survivors are softly struck, with dull luster and surfaces that reveal many marks that were present on the planchets prior to striking. The high certified populations of 5FS and 6FS pieces simply reflect the vastly higher rate of submission for this date than for other Jefferson Nickels.
