Introduction of Coins
Proof sales rose modestly from 1950, and this issue is slightly scarce in relation to later proofs. Most were quite well made, with fully brilliant fields but only occasional frosting on the legends and devices. This contrast typically appears on only the first few hundred pieces struck with fresh dies, as contact between the die cavities and planchets rapidly wears it away. A very collectable doubled-die obverse variety is known for this date. It features distinct doubling of Jefferson's profile and is also evident in the obverse lettering.Read More
