Introduction of Coins
Proof sales rose by more than 50% over 1952, and a huge speculative market had developed in the proof sets issued since 1936. This boost in production seems to have prompted rushed and careless work, as many 1953 proof nickels are deficient in strike. Nevertheless, careful shopping will reward one with a gem. Cameo pieces are scarce but collectable, while Ultra Cameos remain quite rare. A popular DDO variety features bold doubling of the obverse legends.Read More
