Introduction of Coins
The million+ proof sets sold in 1957 resulted in a backlash this year, and sales fell by a third. Of course, this only prompted a speculative frenzy in the "rare" 1958 proof sets! The lower than normal mintage for currency nickels only added to the mania. As in 1957, the 1958 nickels featured a much larger star separating LIBERTY from the date, an appealing feature that was mysteriously dropped in 1959 and subsequent years. 1958 proof nickels are common in gem grades, and enough were coined to make Cameo pieces available to advanced collectors. The Census figures inflate their percentage relative to the overall population, as such coins are more likely to be submitted for grading.Read More
