Introduction of Coins
The hobby of coin collecting reached its apex of broad appeal during the years 1960-64, and this trend received a huge boost with the discovery of the 1960 Small Date cent in a portion of that year's proof sets. Since proof sales had already closed before the variety was discovered, this had no impact on 1960's mintage. The rise in proof set sales called for a greater number of dies, and when these dies were fresh they created Cameo or even Ultra Cameo proofs, which became more available throughout the 1960s. Enough of the former are available for 1960 nickels that serious collectors should not settle for less. Numerous doubled-dies are known for 1960 proof nickels, but the standout variety is FS-801, with its quadrupled reverse.Read More
