Introduction of Coins

1929 D nickels are seldom found fully struck, the coin illustrated being a rare exception. More typical is softness on the highest points of the relief. Luster is usually good for this issue.  The number of gems is limited, due both to striking deficiencies and the tendency of such coins to have many marks. Oftentimes these marks were not the result of contact with other coins after striking. Instead, they were present on the unstruck planchets, and the lack of complete compression in the dies left them visible on the finished coins. A fuller strike would have obliterated these flaws.  Circulated pieces in the grades of XF and AU are rather scarce, but their values are held in check by the many Mint State pieces available.  A minor repunched mintmark variety may be found.Read More
