Introduction of Coins
The mintage of proof 1892 nickels was higher than typical for that decade. This did not reflect greater interest in this denomination, rather it was the result of higher silver proof set sales, as collectors sought the three new silver designs by Charles Barber. The cent and nickel were included in each such set, and they just went along for the ride. Proof 1892 nickels were not as well made as those of 1891, and the population of certified gems is lower than one would expect. Cameo pieces are very scarce. Some proof 1892 nickels show striking weakness in one or more places, and such coins should be avoided.Read More
