Introduction of Coins
When the novelty of the new Barber silver pieces faded after 1892, this cut sales of silver proof sets. Since nickels were included in such sets, their total production fell, as well. 1893 proof nickels are less often seen that those of the 1880s, but they are of generally higher quality. Aside from occasional planchet problems, these proofs are typically well struck and show at least some degree of contrast between brilliant fields and frosted devices. The specimen illustrated is outstanding in both respects.Read More
