Introduction of Coins
Proof sales slid further during 1896, this being the first date in the series having a mintage under two thousand pieces. Examples are slightly scarcer than usual across all grades, but the quality of these proofs is generally excellent on coins that have not been mishandled or improperly cleaned. Recurring problems such as lint impressions or tiny planchet flakes may sometimes be seen. The U. S. Mint produced some of its very finest proofs during the years 1895-1900, and there is a higher percentage of Cameo proofs for these dates than for those of earlier years. The Mint didn't achieve such high quality again until the late 1970s.Read More
