Introduction of Coins

More vigorous polishing of the dies and planchets furnished the type of proof coin collectors expected, though the mint generally failed to provide any contrasting texture to the die cavities. This brilliance often came at the expense of detail, with the shallower features of the design being partially obliterated. From 1936 through 1942 collectors were permitted to order proof coins individually, so the mintages varied from one denomination to another. The cent and nickel typically won such competitions, as these were the coins collectors of the time most sought for their date/mint series, as well. This issue is scarce relative to the great demand for it. Most have survived in reasonably nice condition, though the limits of the mint's 1930s procedures essentially prohibit the ultra high grades associated with current proof coinage.Read More
