Introduction of Coins
Interest in the three major varieties of nickels coined during 1883 was quite high, as were sales for all three. This subtype without CENTS on its reverse became a speculative favorite, with the result that it remains plentiful in all but the highest grades. A fair number of Cameo proofs have been certified, as well. There are two different reverse varieties, the one used first having a doubled letter S in PLURIBUS. This was evidently a hand punched die which preceded the complete hub used for the remaining pieces, and examples are rare. As it stands, collector interest in these reverse varieties is very low.Read More
