Introduction of Coins
The proof 1885 nickel enjoyed a generous mintage, and examples remain plentiful today. Given the rarity of Mint State currency pieces, these proofs have long filled this date slot for many collectors, which has increased demand for this date within the proof series. The high number certified represents a greater inclination to have 1885 nickels graded than exists for other dates. Most survivors appear to have been well made, though weakness may sometimes be seen in the same places as for currency strikes: the hair above Liberty's forehead and the lower left of the wreath at the corn cob.Read More
