Introduction of Coins
This date represents another instance in which the proof edition has attained more importance than its actual availability warrants. Unworn currency nickels of 1886 are quite rare, so there is additional price pressure on the proofs, along with a higher incidence of submissions. Gems of this date are as plentiful as the high mintage suggests, though the proofs of the late 1880s are frequently less than fully brilliant in their fields. Also, Cameo proofs of this date are quite rare, due in no small part to this careless preparation of the planchets and dies.Read More
