Introduction of Coins
This issue is not rare, but it is noticeably less available across all grades than the most common dates of the 1840s. The Mint State population is thin but probably adequate for the small circle of advanced collectors. The standout variety for 1848 is the Large Date. This die was punched with the logotype for the dime, and the date intrudes well into Liberty's base. This is quite rare and highly sought. Of lesser rarity is the 1848/48 with normal, Medium Date, but this is likewise popular. There are old claims of 1848/7 and 1848/6 varieties, but those underlying numerals are uncertain.Read More
