Introduction of Coins
Though it had a mintage similar to that of its Philadelphia Mint cousin, this issue is noticeably more scarce across all grades. Gems are rare, due at least in part to the fact that these New Orleans Mint coins were not as well made. Die-clash impressions, cracks and areas of weakness are more often seen. Three different mintmark sizes were used for this date. The Small O and Medium O (photos) varieties carry no premium, but the Large O reverse leftover from 1838's production is rare and desirable.Read More
