HALF DIME
Introduction of Coins
With the coinage of silver at the Philadelphia Mint at a historic low during 1864 there existed little need for half dimes to pay off depositors in amounts ending in an odd amount. The few thousand half dimes of this date saw little circulation at the time, though both proof and currency pieces seem to have paid their dues in later years. This was believed by numismatists to have been a proof-only date as late as the 1960s, and early coin folders and albums show it as such. The few Mint State pieces known today are from a small hoard that surfaced in the late 1960s or early '70s. Problem-free, worn examples are exceedingly rare.Read More
