HALF DIME

Introduction of Coins

This has always been a rare issue, one that was unknown in Mint State until a small hoard (Walter Breen said 14 pieces) was dispersed during the early 1970s. A few of these were impaired and may not qualify as MS today.  All San Francisco Mint half dimes were subject to being fashioned into items of jewelry such as cuff links and stick pins. Indeed, it appears that the increase in their mintage after 1864 may have been prompted by this market, as there existed little need for them as a medium of exchange in the West. Examples that qualify for numeric certified grading are quite rare.Read More
