HALF DIME
Introduction of Coins
Like most San Francisco Mint half dimes of the 1860s, this date was frequently mutilated in the course of being used for jewelry purposes. Problem-free circulated examples are very rare, as are Mint State pieces. There is some disagreement within published sources as to exactly how many repunched date varieties exist for 1865 S, but only one is distinctive enough to warrant collector interest. Given the scarcity of 1865 S half dimes in general, it's very unlikely that any variety will warrant a premium over the base value.Read More
