HALF DIME
Introduction of Coins
This issue follows the pattern set by all low mintage Philadelphia Mint half dimes of the 1860s. It saw very limited circulation at the time, and Mint State pieces make up a disproportionately high percentage of the small surviving population. During this period when silver coins were not circulating in most of the nation, many of them did find their way to Canada and, to a lesser extent, Latin America. There they circulated in the absence of adequate domestic coinage, though Canada finally addressed this matter in 1870 specifically to drive out the American issues. This episode likely accounts for those 1866(P) half dimes found worn.Read More
