HALF DIME

Introduction of Coins

During the Civil War and for several years afterward silver coinage was struck at the Philadelphia Mint only to provide for those few depositors of silver who requested coin (most preferred to receive their bullion in the form of refined bars). Half dime coinage resulted almost solely from the need to pay off fractional dollars on such deposits.  Mint State 1868(P) half dimes are very scarce, and a higher than usual percentage of them are prooflike. This is easily explained by the low mintage for this issue, as the dies weren't used long enough to entirely lose their original brilliance. Attractive circulated pieces are as rare or more so, though obviously less highly sought.Read More
