HALF DIME
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Introduction of Coins
Though the Philadelphia Mint's output of half dimes fell by more than half from 1853, the mintage for 1854 was still quite large for this series. The 1854(P) half dime is fairly common across all grades through MS 65. Collectors will want to shop for a well struck example from fresh dies, and they should also avoid the frequently seen die-clash impressions, which are distracting on a type coin. Minor repunched date varieties are known, but the most appealing variety is the one in which the date was placed too high and overlaps Liberty's base.Read More
