HALF DIME
Introduction of Coins
This date saw little circulation at the time of issue, as the suspension of specie payment by banks and the Treasury led to the hoarding of all gold and silver coins in most of the nation. The survival rate of 1862 half dimes in Mint State is thus disproportionately high, and examples remain fairly in grades as high as MS 65. Most, however, suffer from the characteristic striking weakness at the lower shield and upper left of the wreath. The coin illustrated is typical in this regard.Read More
