HALF DIME
Introduction of Coins
The half dime was abolished by law in April of 1873. This final date of half dime coinage typically is lumped together with the common 1871-72 coins, yet both its mintage and surviving Mint State population are quite a bit lower. It may be, too, that some 1873(P) half dimes remained at the mint and were subsequently melted. Gems are particularly scarce and underappreciated. The example illustrated reveals the weakness so often found with this coin type. The lower left portion of the shield and the upper left of the wreath, features directly opposite one another in the dies, are both quite weakly struck.Read More
