Introduction of Coins
This date is plentiful as a proof, though the quality of these coins is variable. The copper-nickel alloy was still problematic for the Mint, though not to the extent seen in the 1860s. While most 1882 proof nickels have nice, reflective fields, some will reveal a graininess that suggests improper heat treatment of polishing of the planchet. The example illustrated suffers from a minor strike-through impairment at the left legend stop on its reverse. Despite such minor issues, gems are fairly plentiful, though Cameo proofs are in limited supply. Acquiring a proof may be the only way to get an 1882 nickel having a fully formed numeral 2 in its date, as this is so often filled on currency pieces.Read More
