Introduction of Coins
The total sales of proof nickels in 1869 comprised the 600 included in silver proof sets plus an unknown number sold as part of the minor sets. Bowers provided an estimate of 850-1,100, which seems reasonable. All feature the so-called "wide date," which is the correct size for Shield Nickels, and this obverse is paired with a Reverse of 67 die. Proofs of average quality are fairly common, with this date becoming scarce only at the PF 65 level and higher. Cameo pieces are very rare, though perhaps not as much as for earlier dates. Most proofs are quite sharply struck, though a few, such as the example illustrated, may have been incomplete in the stars.Read More
