While 700 1875 nickels were included in the silver proof sets of that year, an additional number were sold to buyers of the minor coins alone. Based on the figures of 1878 and later, it's likely that the total sales were 1500 or more. Most proof coins of the 1870s, particularly the minor issues, were made with indifferent care. Less than full strikes are not unusual, and these coins were sometimes not struck well enough to smooth out the graininess of the planchets. This accounts in part for the scarcity of gems.
