The 1,150 sales figure for silver proof sets reflects the significance of this centennial year, as many Americans sought keepsakes of the nation's birthday. Philadelphia's hosting of the Centennial Exposition prompted many tourists to take side trips to the mint in that city, where a tour and the purchase of souvenir proof coins were almost guaranteed. The total sales of proof 1876 nickels likely reached 2000 or so. Variable quality is the rule for this year, as for most 1870s issues. Finding an example that has deeply reflective fields on both sides will be challenging.
