Introduction of Coins

Half dime coinage resumed in 1829 after a hiatus of more than 20 years. Chief Engraver William Kneass provided new designs based on the 1807 Capped Bust Liberty of John Reich. There may have been problems in perfecting the dies, as this mintage utilized no less than six obverse dies and 10 reverses. These were combined to produce 18 die marriages. Three of the reverses featured three lines in each vertical red stripe of the shield, while the remainder used just two lines to form the stripes. Rare marriages include LM-6, -9, -10, -11, -12 and -18, while LM-8 is the rarest of all. The remaining marriages are common or are just somewhat scarce. These common varieties provide a fair number of Mint State pieces, and coins having just light wear are also readily available to the collector.Read More
