Introduction of Coins
1830 half dimes are common enough at or near the Mint State level that collectors will be able to find a satisfactory example. Some will display striking weakness in the eagle's head and in the shield where it meets the eagle's right wing. Weakness may also be seen in the highest points of Liberty's portrait. Six obverse dies and eight reverses were used in various combinations to produce 14 die marriages. These have been cataloged by Logan-McCloskey (LM) numbers, some of which include decimal divisions to indicate progressive die states. Rare marriages include LM-6 and LM-10, while LM-5 and LM-11 are very rare. LM-1, -2, -9, -12, -13 and -14 (photos) are somewhat scarce, the remaining four marriage common.Read More
