Introduction of Coins
This is another high-mintage issue that is surprisingly difficult to find in top grades. While most 1953-D quarter were well made and tend to have more detail than their coastal cousins, many are marred by numerous small contact marks. A nice DDR variety is known for this issue, but it is overshadowed by two popular mintmark varieties. The first has letter D punched over a previously punched, inverted D. The second is allegedly D over S, though there is not complete agreement on exactly what letters are present. Complicating the matter is that the D was itself repunched several times over one or possibly two letters S.Read More
