Introduction of Coins
This proved to be the final emission of quarter dollars from the San Francisco Mint until it began striking the S-less Special Mint Set coins of 1965-67. The dies for 1954-S quarters seem to have been used until they failed altogether, as most Mint State pieces show signs of heavy die erosion and loss of detail. Unlike the 1940s, when such dies were repolished to extend their life times, often giving the coins prooflike surfaces, in the '50s the dies were allowed to rot and then discarded. While gems are plentiful through MS 67, the discriminating collector will attempt to find a specimen struck from dies that had seen limited service.Read More
