Introduction of Coins

With the nationwide coin shortage now a matter of debate in Congress and the media, the Denver Mint was working to its fullest capacity to produce all denominations. The total for 1963-D quarter dollars was over 100 million for the second year in a row. It almost seems that as mintages rose, quality control declined. This issue is scarcer than usual in MS 66 and quite rare in MS 67. A large percentage of the quarters coined 1963-64 went to bullion hoarders after 1965, adding to the already heavy trade in BU bags among coin speculators. These pieces were moved repeatedly in bag quantities, and the contents of those bags soon became heavily marked from frequest coin-to-coin contact. A number of minor varieties are known, but the most desirable is a very distinct doubled-die obverse.Read More
