Introduction of Coins

The coin collecting hobby reached its all time high watermark of popularity in the spring of 1964, with the prices of both vintage and recent coin issues peaking at levels that would not be seen again for many years afterward. This speculative activity was driven to a frenzy with the release of the new Kennedy Half Dollar in March, and the highly sought coin pushed proof set production to nearly four million. The Mint struggled to fill these orders, and countless more sets could have been sold if sales had not been cut off. The urgency of striking so many proof coins led to a slight dip in average quality, as the dies were used more than was ideal. Still, there are huge numbers of gem 1964 quarters both raw and certified. Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples are more abundant than for earlier years, due in no small part to the great number of dies employed. Each die, when new, was likely to have frosty die cavities. A minor DDO variety is known, but it has not attracted much attention from collectors.Read More
