Introduction of Coins
Since 1951 proof set sales had risen annually at a rate of 50% or more, and this occurred again in 1955. Gems quarters of this date are relatively common, even with the Cameo designation. Ultra Cameo proofs are very scarce and highly sought. The Philadelphia Mint introduced a new method of packaging its proof coins midway through 1955's sales. Sets delivered early in the year featured the familiar individual sleeves stapled together and placed into a square box, while later ones utilized a single plastic sleeve heat sealed with the coins in individual compartments. This was then put into a paper envelope with sheets of cardboard on either side as protection. This superior packaging resulted in fewer instances of coins contacting one another and also gave rise to coin albums designed to hold these "pliofilm" sleeves.Read More
