Introduction of Coins

The frenzied market in proof sets returned in 1959, after the set back of 1957-58, and it was now joined by a mania for both rolls and bags of uncirculated coins of recent dates. While this activity hardly qualified as numismatics, it was the new reality of the coin market. As in 1957, proof set sales exceeded a million units, but this time that didn't seem like enough to satisfy speculative demand. The trend toward ever-increasing sales would last through 1964. The proof quarter dollar of 1959 is common in grades through PF 68, with a fairly generous supply of PF 69 examples, too. Nearly all of these are fully brilliant or display only slight frosting on the devices of one or both sides. Coins designated as Cameo are available to advanced collectors, but Ultra Cameo specimens are especially rare for this date. One of the better DDO varieties among proof quarters is found for this date. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is quite boldly doubled, and this variety is quite popular.Read More
