Introduction of Coins
The coin market continued to heat up during 1960, and the discovery of two different date size for the cents of that year drove it into a frenzy that lasted through the first half of 1964. Since proof set orders typically began toward the end of the previous year, with the Mint cutting them off before the first sets were shipped, it's likely that this year's sales were not affected by the discovery of a very scarce Small Date proof cent. In any case, sales rose by more than half a million units in 1960. After three years of poor quality control in the use and maintenance of dies, things began to improve with this year's proof coins. While overly polished dies are still seen on many coins, with even the highest points of the design being a bit blurred, the number of Cameo and Ultra Cameo examples rose steadily 1960-64. This is the first date for which UC pieces are actually plentiful enough to be easily acquired by either date or type collectors. Also becoming more frequently seen over the next few years were doubled dies. The 1960 proof quarter offers a nice one for the obverse and two really good ones for the reverse. Additional such varieties are known, but they're too minor to attract much interest.Read More
