Introduction of Coins

The pace of proof set sales seems to have stabilized this year, with just a modest increase over those of 1961. Perhaps, buyers were disappointed that the previous year's sets offered nothing as spectacular as the 1960 Small Date cents to drive up prices. The steady increase in quality control continued during 1962, with far fewer proofs of this and other recent years showing the excessively polished dies and poor detail typical of so many coins from the 1950s. Sharp-eyed collectors will notice that the Mint's engravers did occasionally touch up the dies to restore details lost in polishing. For the quarter dollar this is most often seen in the lines separating the eagle's wing feathers. At least two minor doubled-die obverses are known, but both are quite minor and of little interest.Read More
