Introduction of Coins
Proof set sales for 1963 nearly matched those of 1961-62, and these figures represent the number of sets the Philadelphia Mint could handle and not necessarily the number ordered. In the 1960s-70s, orders were taken starting November of the previous year and cut off when production capacity was reached. Many buyers ordered extra sets on speculation, helping to reach the limit very quickly. This seemed like a wise move at the time, since proof sets typically rose in value. Sets of the 1957-64 years later became a drug on the market when speculative interest waned during the 1970s-90s. The quality of 1963 proof sets as delivered was generally high, and gem pieces of fully brilliant finish are abundant. The coveted Cameo and Ultra Cameo designations comprise a minority of these coins, but in overall numbers they are readily collectable compared to pre-1960 issues. The only notable variety is a very distinct doubled-die reverse that is quite popular.Read More
