More than a million quarter dollars were struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1853, as this facility contributed to the massive effort at repopulating America's circulating coinage. Lighter in weight than previous issues, these coins remained in circulation for decades. Though far less often seen than its Philadelphia Mint cousin, the 1853-O quarter with arrows and rays is fairly plentiful in circulated grades. Mint State examples are genuinely rare, and the data below likely included some duplication from resubmissions.
