Introduction of Coins
The rays added to 1853's coinage proved troublesome, leading to premature failure of the dies, so this feature was omitted thereafter. The use of obverse arrowheads alone was thought to be sufficient in distinguishing coins of the new, lower weight standard, and thus the quarters and halves now corresponded exactly to the dimes and half dimes. The massive replacement of old tenor (pre-1853) silver coins continued into 1854. The huge Philadelphia Mint production would have required about 100 die pairs, yet no particularly interesting varieties have surfaced. This issue is plentiful in Mint State, though the herd thins considerably at the gem level (MS 65 and higher).Read More
