This issue offers another example in which a fairly generous mintage has nonetheless resulted in a Mint State rarity. In fact, any grade approaching the MS level is likewise scarce for 1857-O quarters. Most examples are weakly struck in places. Problem areas include the stars, Liberty's head and the eagles right (viewer's left) leg. Though several die pairs have been identified, the only notable variety is a misplaced date in which the tops of duplicate numerals 18 are seen within the denticles below the correct date placement.Read More
