Introduction of Coins
The Philadelphia Mint once again over-estimated the demand for proof coins in 1860. Of 1,000 proof quarter dollars coined, just 542 were sold and the remainder melted after the end of the year. Examples are not rare, except in the higher grades, and a fair number of Cameo coins have been certified. Two die pairs went into this production. Both utilized the Type 2 Obverse introduced in 1859, but the two obverse dies were each paired with different reverses, one a Type 1 and the other a Type 2. The latter pairing accounts for the vast majority of extant proofs.Read More
