Introduction of Coins
The 1851-O quarter is very scarce in any grade, due both to its low mintage and the likelihood that many were melted for their bullion value shortly after issue. Unlike other entries from the early 1850s, there is no skewing toward Mint State survivors, and such coins are extremely rare. Most examples are weakly struck at right, probably from the die faces not being perfectly parallel to one another. Despite its very low mintage, two reverse dies were paired with a single reverse to create two die marriages. There is nothing special about either, and their significance is overwhelmed by the general rarity of this issue as a date/mint.Read More
