Introduction of Coins
The hoarding of first gold, then silver coins during the Civil War affected the survival rate of this issue in a way quite favorable to collectors. With coins circulating only in the Far West, the Philadelphia Mint quarters of this and the next several dates are disproportionately available in unworn condition. They were not available, except at a premium as measured in paper money, so more examples remained unused and forgotten until decades later. The 1862(P) quarter, while slightly scarce in overall numbers, is thus available to both date and type collectors. From this year onward, all Philadelphia Mint quarters were coined from dies of the new hubs first introduced during 1859, though the reverse was modified in 1866 to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Several die pairs are known for 1862(P), but there are no varieties of general interest.Read More
