Introduction of Coins
Some 950 proofs were coined, though it's not certain that all were placed with collectors. The change in weight standard that went into effect the following year made these coins obsolete, and any few on hand at that time were subject to melting. The mints were not too particular about this, however, as there are documented cases of proofs being sold of earlier dates. In any case, this issue is not rare. Indeed, it is more common than Mint State examples, and values reflect this fact. A generous number of Cameo proofs have been certified, though these may include some duplication. As was usual for silver proofs of the period, just a single die pair was employed. The reverse die includes a raised line flaw on the left border of the eagle's shield, and this die reappeared for several more dates.Read More
