Introduction of Coins

The production of quarter dollars by the Philadelphia Mint rose again in 1872, though this remains a somewhat scarce issue. It's likely that some remained on hand at the mint when new legislation raised the weight of the quarter dollar in 1873. Though the change was so slight that these 1872 quarters fell within the legal tolerance of the new issue, the earlier pieces would have been destroyed as a matter of routine. Mint State survivors are very scarce but not truly rare. Several gems are noted, and these typically are well struck with frosty luster. Larry Briggs recorded four dies each for obverse and reverse, for a total of five die marriages. Discovered later is an obverse die featuring a distinctively repunched date.Read More
